And protecting the 149 with a good pop screen looks vital. But taking the grill off the 147 probably wouldn't explain all of the sonic difference. However, the metal protective grill on the 149 is differently shaped than on the 147 and above all is much less dense with only one layer - allowing more sonic vibrations (and saliva from the singer) to reach the capsule.so a little more top end may be derived from that. The capsules are both supposed to be from the U47 and M49. I don't find any mention in the specs of where the difference apart from the input sensivity specs. The 149 is considerably more open on top, more present, higher quality. Second: I'd agree with all of your comparison comments above. In the end, the 149 signal is about as hot or even a bit hotter than the U87ai. The signal gain generated by the valve is about 10db for both mics. From looking at the specs, this comes from variance in the input sensitivity figures: 50mv/pa for the 149 vs 20mv/pa for the 147. Just received the Neumann 149 and 147 valve mics on loan from the dealer and lined them up with our U87ai to test them on vocals and speech.įirst thing: I had to gain adjust to compare fairly because the 149's output signal level is about 5db hotter than the 147.a big difference. I do like to hear some more people who own both though. You can't decide on what the DUC people tell you. So please, try to persuade your dealer to get them for you. Maybe i will do buy another this year and i would surely compare the M147 with the MG 92.1s again. I wish the M147 was available that time, than i could have made a comparison between those.
I could never live with the idea that there would be a better mic if i bought the MG. Finally the race was between the expensive M149 and the UM92.1s The M149 was warmer, had a warmer bottom. Very nice mike with a very pleasant sound. The great suprise was the Microtech Gefell UM92.1s. A distributor who gives a dead mike for a test is a blummer. But not as nice as the U67 and U47short body. The GT's where not very convincing but i prefered the older MD2 above the newer MD3. I worked for a long time with the U67 and wanted something like it. The U67 and U47tube were borrowed from a friend and where not for sale, only for comparison. 2 yrs ago i wanted to buy a vocal mic, so i did manage to get a bunch from my dealer.
